Chequamegon National Forest

Mono Zero. A 'trim ring' found along the highway balances on a stump in this monoculture stand of pine. Replacing the native northwoods forest with fast growing stands of pine and birch is a rampant practice in the north just like it is in much of the rest of the country. As pretty as this stand of trees looks in the photograph this is no more a forest than a field of wheat is a prairie. Biodiversity is extremely low in these plantations which provide very little animal habitat.

Claw Zero. The claw-like shape at the end of a downed log in the Chequamegon provides a natural way of proclaiming the message of zerocircles. Recovering older second-grwoth forests like this one near Spearhead Lake should never be allowed
to be converted to pine plantations.
